Hi Friends. I'm back with another hot take on the latest books I've read. I know I said I was on my romance kick for a little while and I still am. I actually read this one early last month. I'm just now getting around to reviewing it. That's what happens when you read faster than you review. The books begin to pile up. On the plus side, if I were to take a quick reading hiatus you'd never know. I have so many that I haven't reviewed yet. I'd be set for a few months if I paced myself.
Anyway, I heard about this one. Don't remember where. I think Amazon may have recommended I check it out and then, as if I needed the confirmation, someone in the Facebook group I'm in mentioned it as well. So I decided to check it out. After all, I am a sucker for a serial killer story. To hear a story like this told from the wife's perspective was interesting, to say the least. I always wonder about this kind of thing. I end up looking sideways at the wife of a serial killer, because how is your husband out here slicing and dicing people and you had not even the slightest clue? How is that possible? It definitely makes you wonder. Let's get into this one..
Excerpt from Amazon
Every marriage has its secrets....
Beth and Tom Hardcastle are the envy of their neighbourhood—they have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect family.
When the police knock on their door one evening, Beth panics. Tom should be back from work by now—what if he’s crashed his car? She fears the worst.
But the worst is beyond imagining.
As the interrogation begins, Beth will find herself questioning everything she believed about her husband.
They’re saying he’s a monster. And they’re saying she knew.
Okay. So. Super short synopsis, but it gets straight to the point. Beth is married to Tom. Tom is convicted of murdering a woman. Beth is floored because she had no idea he was this monster of a man. She doesn't believe he is guilty. Overall, this was a decent book. I didn't hate it and I didn't love it. It was just decent.
I will say, I feel bad for my husband though. I was reading this when we went to the beach with our friends, and someone asked me what I was reading. From the look on her face when I responded, I can tell she expected me to be reading someone's self help or biography book. Like normal people. But nope. Murder. She glanced over at my husband and asked: "Does that ever make you nervous?" and he just shrugged. At this point, he is pretty much used to my penchant for reading books about murder, death, and other ugly topics.
Let's take a closer look at what I liked versus what I didn't like about The Serial Killer's Wife.
The Plot. Like I mentioned before, this is a pretty decent book. The plot kept me entertained and even when I was annoyed at how things were moving, the plot was interesting enough to keep me coming back.
The Ending. I love a good twist and the ending on this one threw me for a loop. I'd had a sneaking suspicion from the jump and even though I was somewhat correct, I didn't expect things to play out the way they did. So kudos to Alice Hunter for pulling the wool over my eyes on that one.
P.S. "pulling the wool over my eyes" ? "sneaking suspicion" ? when did I become so old?
The Pace. Oh my goodness was this book slow. It took so long to get to the climax of the story that there were a few times I almost gave up and didn't finish. I'm glad I stuck it out until the end, but the pacing of this book was painfully slow. Nothing of substance happened until closer to the end of the book and by that point it felt like such a rush to explain everything before the ending. I feel like there was a lot of unneeded information that could have been left out.
As you can obviously see, I don't have a whole bunch to say good or bad about this book. It was just "meh" if anything, but if you're like me, and these types of stories intrigue you, I'd say give it a go. You may enjoy it more than I did and you may not. Either way, you can purchase it on amazon here.
