Hi friends. I'm back with another hot take on the latest books I've read. So get this, I'm laying in my bed one night, minding my own business when I get a message on Instagram. I open it, and I am shocked to see that it is Minka Kent! A whole author! She wanted to know if I was interested in reviewing her newest book. I won't lie to you, at first I thought it was a lil scammy-scam. I was about to hit that block button and go ahead to sleep, but something told me to respond.

Turns out, it was legit. She sent me the link on Booksprout

quick side note: I had NO idea so many of these websites existed until I ventured into the bookstagram/book blogging world. NetGalley, Booksprout, Bookbub, Good Reads, Story Graph...So many websites to read books. So many authors that submit their work for people to read and review. Someone explain to me: HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KEEP UP?! Dis tew much, chile I am skressed. SKRESSED.

But anyway, Minka sent me the link and I dove right into this new title of hers. It gave me Verity vibes at first. (If you've been in the book world for any time at all you'd know that Verity by Colleen Hoover has the girlies in a chokehold. If I had a nickel for every time I saw it mentioned I would be rich.) There were some similar aspects at first glance, but that lasted for like a page and half before things took a much different turn. So without further ado, let's dive right in shall we?

Synopsis Taken Directly From Amazon

Newlywed Jade Westmore has finally found her forever in husband Wells, a charming, successful, and recently divorced architect—only there’s one caveat. Behind the gates of their elysian estate, hidden from street view in the caretaker’s cottage … lives Wells’ first wife, Sylvie.

Three years ago, the original Mrs. Westmore suffered an unfortunate accident—and hasn’t uttered a sound since. Not a physician, psychologist, or world-renowned specialist has been able to elicit so much as a word from the silent woman … until now.

On an ordinary Tuesday while Wells was away—despite instructions to never disturb the fragile woman—Jade visited her isolated predecessor bearing a peace offering: a bouquet of white lilies. Only she wasn’t expecting Sylvie to have something for her as well: a slip of torn notebook paper with a single word scrawled in shaky black ink.

That word? Run.

My first thought: Oh. Okay so this is just another Verity. Alright.

My Second Thought: Wait....What? Okay no...This is nothing like Verity.

I started the book on Friday night and ended up finishing it on Sunday morning. I was standing in the middle of the floor reading, instead of trying to get ready for church.

Ps. If God is mad at me for being late to service, I blame you, Minka Kent.

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I read the Unmissing by Minka and it was not my favorite. I had a lot of complaints about that one, but I do believe she may have redeemed herself in my book with this one. It kept me entertained from beginning to end. There is nothing I hate more than a book that draaaaaaaaags. I have the attention span of a small squirrel, so I really need these authors to just grab me by the shoulders and push me in head first. Kinda how Sylvie fell into the pool in the story. Oops. Too soon? My bad. What I meant was: Slow burns end up fizzling out for me.

I think my main takeaway from all of this, and books like it, is that you probably shouldn't marry a person you haven't known very long. I thought this was common knowledge, but the countless True Crime cases I've heard with this same trope tells me that it's not.

If you plan on spending the rest of your life with a person, couldn't hurt to wait it out a bit. Make sure you know them in all stages of life. Happy, sad, sick, and mad. At least take a compatibility quiz. Something!

But I digress, let's take a closer look at what I liked and didn't like about The Silent Woman.

This was an easy read. If you have a quiet weekend coming up (or you have list of things to do that you're avoiding) this book would be a nice one to just sit with for a weekend. It's not a heavy book. It's very easy to digest. If you need a quick thrill to add to your TBR list for October, this would be a great one to add!

Jade. Aside from the fact that she married ole dude way too fast in my opinion (no judgment for those who have gotten married in the same timeline) I appreciated the fact that she was headstrong and determined to get to the bottom of what was happening. Some people would just ignore the information they found and hope for the best, but Ms. Jade super sleuthed her way to the truth. Like a real writer would. Loved that.

Plot. So the plot was a smidge predictable, but the real mystery was in the "how" not the "who." Like how was this accomplished? How was Sylvie able to communicate the note (not a spoiler. Literally in the synopsis) to Jade when Doctors had said she wasn't able to comprehend or communicate? I had a good time reading and trying to put the pieces of the story together.

I don't have much to say here. This was a solid story. Just enough twisty turns to keep you guessing but not make the story seem convoluted. We hopped right into the story without having to build up too much. It was entertaining without being far fetched. The characters were well rounded, not flat and stiff.

Sure! Like I said, this was an easy yet entertaining read. I had a lot of fun with it. It's due to release this month actually. September 27th, 2022 so you have a few days to go before it's available for purchase. Make it your first book purchase of the Fall since fall starts this week.

If you want to purchase, you can grab it here. I think it will be available to Kindle Unlimited members for free (with the membership of course) but for those of you that need to actually feel the book in your hands while you rea, there are physical copy options as well.

Congrats to Minka Kent on the newest book release and Thank You for allowing the Booky Babe to get early access to it. I hope that this is a successful book launch for you.

So there ya have it folks! The Silent Woman by Minka Kent will be out next week! Go ahead and gather your coins together so you can purchase it.
